George W. Montgomery papers and account books, 1866-1932.

Papers and ledgers record plantation operations for the Montrose, Morgan Fields, Lower Banks, Cape Place, Okalona, and Islington Plantations. Entries chiefly relate to the accounts of tenant farmers and sharecroppers. Cashbooks include records for house and store expenses, contracts with sharecroppers of E. N. Leonard, accounts with sharecroppers for food and clothing (1866-1875), records of cash sales (1890-1892, 1894), cash accounts for a Montrose store (1892-1893), inventories of stock, and invoices for merchandise. Ledgers contain accounts of laborers and sharecroppers for food and clothing, records of costs of ginning cotton, records of amounts of cotton picked, copies of leases, blacksmithing fees, a list of the assessed value of land and dwellings, and other items pertaining to the Montrose, Morgan Fields, Lower Banks, Cape Place, Okalona, and Islington plantations (1875-1889). Ledgers of George W. Montgomery provide additional documentation of the management of the Montrose Plantation (1892-1902). Montrose Plantation is further documented by cashbooks, ledgers, and receipt books (1915-1932) kept by E. B. Saunders as plantation manager for F. L. Smith of Phoenix, New York, owner of Montrose Plantation. E. B. Saunders' cashbook recording the accounts of Trinidad Plantation is included.
